Hope for Rare Diseases
Don’t be fooled by the name: Rare diseases affect more than half a million people in Switzerland – half of whom are children. This is a serious issue, as many of these diseases are genetic and the impairments last a lifetime. Learn about the research approaches that may offer hope.
A disease is considered rare if it affects fewer than five out of every 10,000 people. In total, approximately 580,000 people in Switzerland live with a rare disease—about half of them are children. More than 7,000 rare diseases are known worldwide.
Rare diseases are often severe and usually lifelong. Many have a genetic origin. For most people affected, there is still no cure. However, an early diagnosis and good medical care can significantly improve quality of life.
The Long Road to a Diagnosis
Many people affected wait years for a diagnosis. Often, numerous doctor visits are necessary before the cause of their symptoms is identified. The situation is particularly difficult for people who, despite extensive testing, do not receive a diagnosis. Specialized centers and counseling services help them find guidance and support.
Research Brings Hope
Research is the greatest hope for those affected to receive disease-specific treatment. It helps to better understand diseases, speed up diagnoses, and develop new therapies.
ITINERARE contributes to researching new diagnostic and treatment options and rapidly translating them into medical practice. To this end, the research program works closely with national and international research networks as well as specialized treatment centers.
